A Loving God in a Troubled World

Written by: John Sernaque

Dear Readers,

It always amazes me how the world continually claims to have made new discoveries. New planets, new animals, new plants, etc. Yet these have been here since the beginning of time. There is a program currently airing on PBS called the Retro Report. The show reports on present topics and contrasts these topics to past events in history. This reminds me of the old adage you will hear people say, “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” To a Christian, this is no surprise. The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [is] that which shall be done: and [there is] no new [thing] under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:9. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past. Ecclesiastes 3:15. The Bible speaks in prophecies about the events that have already happened, are happening, and will happen again.

And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they did eat, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they builded; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed [them] all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Luke 17: 26-30.

The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would show them a sign from heaven. He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, [It will be] fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, [It will be] foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O [ye] hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not [discern] the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. Matthew 16: 1-4

How can we be sure? Well, the Bible tells us, and God’s Word is sure. There are many Bible prophecies in the Old Testament regarding Jesus alone that were fulfilled in the New Testament. Yet, the world would rather consult tarot cards, mediums, or even pastors for their guidance as to how they should continue to carry on their lives. This is not pleasing to God.

Then said Saul unto his servants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and inquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, [there is] a woman that hath a familiar spirit at Endor. 1 Samuel 28: 7

And the LORD hath done to him, as he spake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, [even] to David: 1 Samuel 28:17

Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day. 1 Samuel 28:18

We must put our trust in God, and not man. Consulting the guide book of life, the Bible, the Holy Scriptures that so many did shed their blood in order for us to have the Holy Bible freely available to us. The morality of this world is degrading day by day, but God is a loving and merciful God. His desire is for all to come to Him, repent, and surrender their lives to Him. Christ Jesus is our Lord, who died for us that we may live. That by His stripes, we may be healed. Cured from the disease of sin, so rampant in this world. He prepares a place for us, otherwise He would not say so. We have all been allowed to be free to choose. Even unto Sodom did God grant them space for repentance.

“The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him.” Psalm 25:14. Abraham had honored God, and the Lord honored him, taking him into His counsels, and revealing to him His purposes. “Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do?” said the Lord. “The cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous, I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.” God knew well the measure of Sodom’s guilt; but He expressed Himself after the manner of men, that the justice of His dealings might be understood. Before bringing judgment upon the transgressors He would go Himself, to institute an examination of their course; if they had not passed the limits of divine mercy, He would still grant them space for repentance. {PP 139.1}

Men whom God favored, and to whom He entrusted great responsibilities, were sometimes overcome by temptation and committed sin, even as we at the present day strive, waver, and frequently fall into error. Their lives, with all their faults and follies, are open before us, both for our encouragement and warning. If they had been represented as without fault, we, with our sinful nature, might despair at our own mistakes and failures. But seeing where others struggled through discouragements like our own, where they fell under temptations as we have done, and yet took heart again and conquered through the grace of God, we are encouraged in our striving after righteousness. As they, though sometimes beaten back, recovered their ground, and were blessed of God, so we too may be overcomers in the strength of Jesus. On the other hand, the record of their lives may serve as a warning to us. It shows that God will by no means clear the guilty. He sees sin in His most favored ones, and He deals with it in them even more strictly than in those who have less light and responsibility. {PP 238.2}

My prayer is that God will help us overcome the evils and temptations of this world. That we would be granted His strength and courage to repent of our sins, that we would sin no more. That by His compassion and grace, our sins would be forgiven. That we may be worthy to have our names written in His Book of Life. I pray for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, that we may be convicted of God’s Bible Truth, that we may be set free from sin and have eternal life. May God Bless you and keep you. Amen.
