Biblical Reasons for Suffering

Written by: Christopher Sernaque

Dear Readers,

Suffering perfects us

a. “But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.”-Job 23:10

b. “Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;”-Hebrews 5:8-9

Suffering helps us to know Christ

a. “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;”-Philippians 3:10

Suffering helps us understand what others are going through

a.” For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. “-Hebrews 2:18

b. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

Suffering with Christ will make us fit for Heaven

a. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; “- 2 Corinthians 4:17

b. “And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.”-Luke 14:27

Suffering, or rather enduring persecution for God’s sake, brings glory to Christ

a. “Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:”- Colossians 1:24 “Ask, then; ask, and ye shall receive.

"Ask for humility, wisdom, courage, increase of faith. To every sincere prayer an answer will come. It may not come just as you desire, or at the time you look for it; but it will come in the way and at the time that will best meet your need. The prayers you offer in loneliness, in weariness, in trial, God answers, not always according to your expectations, but always for your good.”- Ellen White Gospel Workers 258.3
