Patriarchs and Prophets Chapter 13—The Test of Faith

It had been difficult even for the angels to grasp the mystery of redemption—to comprehend that the Commander of heaven, the Son of God, must die for guilty man. When the command was given to Abraham to offer up his son, the interest of all heavenly beings was enlisted. With intense earnestness they watched each step in the fulfillment of this command. When to Isaac’s question, “Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham made answer, “God will provide Himself a lamb;” and when the father’s hand was stayed as he was about to slay his son, and the ram which God had provided was offered in the place of Isaac—then light was shed upon the mystery of redemption, and even the angels understood more clearly the wonderful provision that God had made for man’s salvation. {PP 155.2}

I cannot even imagine what Abraham had to go through, coming so close to offering up his son. But God stayed that sacrifice. Now, God does not ask any of us to sacrifice our children. No, God forbid. But He does ask us to return unto Him a tenth of our first increase and an offering. That is a small price to pay compared to what God sacrificed for us. Isaac asked Abraham “Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham made answer, “God will provide Himself a lamb;”. Did God not provide that Lamb for us? Yes, He did. So, by Faith, just like Abraham, let us return unto God that which He asks of us that we may understand more clearly, like the angels, the wonderful provision that God has made for our salvation.

Our Father, God Almighty

What a privilege it is to be a recipient of the wonderful provision You have made for man’s salvation. You have blessed us, and kept us, and provided for all our needs and it is with a faithful and cheerful heart that we return unto You these tithes and offerings. We pray that You bless them and multiply them so that Your message of salvation can go out to the four corners of the world. We pray dear Lord, that if we were not able, that You will continue to provide for us, and that by faith, we will be able. We put all our Trust in You. May we all be worthy of having our names written in Your book of life. Forgive us of all our sins, cleanse us from all unrighteousness. All these things we ask and pray, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
